History of Mining

An Overview of the History of Mining

Mining is among the oldest industries on Earth, along with agriculture. Together, mining and agriculture are the only two means of obtaining all of the raw materials needed to support society and our way of life.

Throughout history, mining has played a vital role in the development of society by providing the minerals and metals necessary to build, improve, and transform civilization. The mining industry has shaped the state of Michigan, as well as the nation.

Mining dates back to the dawning of civilization when people used stone, metals, and other materials found on or in the ground. Ancient Egyptians mined Malachite for its decorative properties. Egyptians were also the first known society to have ventured beyond Egypt in search of minerals, and to develop quarries that produced Turquoise, Copper, and Gold.

The Romans, credited with creating the pillars of modern society, developed sophisticated mining exploration and production practices on a large scale throughout Europe.

In North and South America, Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is recognized as being among the birthplaces of mining.

Nearly 5,000 years ago, early Michigan inhabitants used Copper and other metals to make tools and utensils vital for survival such as arrow points, pots, and spoons. These tools shaped their culture and fueled technological advances.

The nineteenth century marked a period in Michigan’s history that saw the greatest production of raw materials such as Iron and Copper. These materials contributed to the shifting and expanding landscape of the United States and the industrial revolution.

Over the decades, Michigan’s mining industry has provided the minerals necessary to build automobiles, railroads, buildings, and other longstanding symbols of American and global society.

As the world continues to develop and grow, so does mining technology. Advances in mining technology are leading to safer and more environmentally friendly mining practices, while providing materials important to further development of society.
