Operations
In 2004, Kennecott opened its administration headquarters in the Harbor Hills business complex located in Marquette. As operations and employee numbers grew, the company began looking for a new home. In June of 2008, Kennecott purchased the old CCI building in Ishpeming, which was considered part of the community's mining history.
The building was built in 1901 as a centralized service office for CCI. In 1952 the engineering building was added, which is now home to the approximately 62 full-time Kennecott employees.
Work performed from this location includes mining and environmental engineering, project management and construction, asset management, procurement, government and community relations, safety, human resources, accounting, and document control.
In 2002, Kennecott Exploration opened a temporary office in Big Bay, and in 2003 the office was moved to Negaunee in the old Airport business complex where it remains today. The exploration office houses all of our core samples from the Eagle mine. Five geologists, two geotechnical assistants and a field operations supervisor working in the Negaunee office split the core to examine and log its content. Once the core is logged, a representative split is given to the MDEQ for storing in a repository in Marquette.
Kennecott’s exploration program continues to be active with drilling activities occurring throughout the Upper Peninsula.
